In a recent paparazzi coverage of Pierce Brosnan’s vacation in Hawaii with wife Keely Shaye-Smith, a lot of talk was made about Keely’s full figured body. It was no surprise at all that blogs and new articles simply said Keely had gone far beyond letting herself go, and should do something about her weight.
However it is just wonderful to hear that Keely is very happy and comfortable with her curves. And she doesn’t just thing so, she made this statement:
“I never shy away from colour or my curves. I like to play up my neckline and shoulders. If a jacket is pulling in the bust, I might just move the button an inch. But I never hide in baggy clothing.”
Furthermore, I think Pierce totally rocks, by having also stated that he thinks his curvy wife is stunning, and that he loved his wife’s curves! Way to go Pierce. It it so refreshing to see such a high profile actor embrace his wife’s natural beauty and not succumb to the stereotypical size 0 mania. Let’s hopes this serves as some inspiration to other men, who think they need a skinny thin woman besides them to be called a man.
Pierce, you totally rock!
Last weekend on Saturday, the anticipated new Nikki Blonsky movie, ‘Queen Sized‘ premiered!
I must say, last year’s mega hit ‘Hairspray’ is a very tough act to follow, however I am sure in this new movie Nikki will shine. The new movie features Nikki portraying the role of Maggie Baker, a plus-size high-school senior who has always pitied herself for not being skinny, pretty or wealthy. When her name turns up on the list of nominees for the homecoming court as a prank, she’s mortified.
It is interesting to note that this movie was actually inspired by true events: the true story of a suburban Detroit teen who in 2004 spurred a national dialogue about a type of teen bullying: students voting less popular peers onto homecoming courts for the purpose of mocking them.
Although I am eager to watch this new movie, I haven’t had a chance to as yet, so if any of your have seen it, do leave some comments about it on this post. What was your opinion on the movie? Will this be another hit for Nikki?
Today I came across a very interesting article on BuddyTV.com which got me thinking. The article itself gives us a closer look into Rebecca Field, the plus size actress who plays the curvy barmaid Janet in the series ‘October Road’. More importantly, it gives us a closer look at what issues she holds close to her heart.
Interestingly enough, this article shows some similarities between Rebecca, and the role she plays in ‘October Road’. Rebecca in fact has had some real life experience at bar tending, and has also recently took on the responsibility of spokesperson for a non-profit group (Multi-service Eating Disorders Association or MEDA), an issue which is made evident by her role in ‘October Road’. Rebecca stresses that:
"In real life beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and the same should be true on television. It’s so important to accept and appreciate our bodies and work to keep them healthy. It’s not about size or a number on the scale. Slowly, but surely, we can change the way women are viewed, on and off screen."
It is great to see a rising star such as Rebecca keeping true to her principles, deciding to inspire and help other plus size women and men, through her work with MEDA.
Often times we see talented plus size ladies suddenly decide to lose weight and change their appearance once they hit the limelight. Names like Sophie Dahl and Star Jones come to mind when I think about this issue. Although I definitely advocate self acceptance whether you are curvy or thin, it is disappointing to see women who previously seemed to be comfortable in their curves, no longer embracing them. I feel sorry when I see people like Sophie who rise up to stardom with a full figure, and also become an icon and role to plus size women (not to mention teenagers), only to suddenly ’succumb’ to it all and lose weight. What a disappointment to all those plus size women who looked up on them; they would now probably be thinking, but why did they feel they had to lose the weight? Anyway, although I guess no one owes anyone anything really, this is something which truly makes me wonder and think.
Ok rant over… going back to Rebecca, it is very refreshing to see a talented plus size actress like her holds a great spot in ‘October Road’ and advocate self love and self acceptance. Way to go Rebecca.
Davica Williams is a confident and beautiful plus size women, who just happened to be chosen the winner in this year’s edition of the "Full Figured and Fabulous Competition" held in Atlant.
Hailing from North Miami Beach in Florida, Davica had never participated in any type of modelling competition beforehand. However modelling had always been her life long dream.
Earlier this month, Plus Model Mag intereviewed Davica. Read the interview here, to find out more about this curvy rising star!
I am very pleased today, to be able to publish a recent interview I held with Nancy Baum, founder of Cherished-Woman.com and successful plus size model.
It was both a pleasure and an honor to get to the chance to speak with Nancy and get a closer look at her work, her career and her new online store.
I recommend you head over to the interview with Nancy and read it, as it is very interesting to get to know how the women behind the leading plus size clothing stores close up. In this interview, Nancy talks about how she got started with her career as a plus size model, and then obviously moves on to speak about her new venture and passion: Cherished-Woman.com.

Last week Woman Within (the new name of Lane Bryant, if you haven’t got used to it still), names successful plus size model Christine Alt as their spokesperson. Christine will be the face and voice for Woman Within, helping to boost up the brand’s connection with existing customers whilst also attracting new ones.
Christine is a renowned name in the plus size fashion industry, having also appeared in top magazines including Vogue.
“I am thrilled to be working with Woman Within,” said Christine Alt. “The clothing and accessories that the brand offers are dedicated to making women feel confident and strong-no matter their size, shape or age. I am looking forward to sharing my life experiences with the Woman Within community and learning more from this loyal customer base.”
It is great to see reputable plus size clothing brands such a Woman Within embark on such professional and large initiatives. Besides obviously helping them gain a better market share, I think it is positive to have women of curves in such prominent and leading positions. They will hopefully help empower full figured women, and become role models for plus size teens, who will finally have someone to look up to.
Without a doubt the eye of the world, or at least the media world and film buffs today, will be on The Academy Awards Ceremony… also known as The Oscars. A number of great films and artists are competing today, and I cannot wait to know for instance whether Forest Whitaker will walk away with the Best Actor in a Leading Role award, and whether Happy Feet will walk away with the Best Animated Feature Film award.
In the meantime I thought it would be a good idea to take a walk down memory lane and look at some of the best dressed curves that have graced the red carpet at The Oscars in the past few years.
Kathy Bates is one of my idols. She is am artist full of passion, grace and style. She wears her age with proud and sophistication, and she looks damn good! She was definitely look fabulous in this silk mousseline chiffon gown, designed by Eric Gaskins, which was paired up with a cranberry duchesse satin opera coat. Simply plus size and simply gorgeous.
Perhaps curvy might not necessarily be the first thing you think of when you mention Whoppi Goldberg. However in this rich and regal black ensemble the lady was rockin’ the show. A black satin gown, matched up with a velvet overcoat which was designed by Donna Karan, simply screamed out elegance and made Whoppi a curvy icon on the night.
A petite, but still very curvy, Imelda Staunton blew me away with her excellent performance in Vera Drake. That is one film I will remember for a very long time. I am sure this stunning dress will remain unforgettable to Imelda as well! She strutted her stuff on the red carpet wearing a teal design by John Bright.
After having taken a look at three of the most unforgettable and best dressed plus size women to have graced the red carpet on The Oscars night, I’m very eager to watch this year’s event unfold, as well as see what fashion will grace the red carpet this year!
As Liria Mersini reports this week at About.com, it’s great to see curvy women in Hollywood winning Golden Globes! This year we see America Ferrera from Ugly Betty, and Jennifer Hudson from Dreamgirls winning awards!
Okay, so many of you might say that these ladies are far from curvy, and indeed I do agree. However you have to give it up to the people in Hollywood for taking baby steps. These ladies have more meat than bones, and we’re happy they’re still getting the recognition they deserve! Well done to America Ferrera and Jennifer Hudson for winning Golden Globes this year, and for having impeccable fashion sense.
