Who is Gabourey Sidibe?
Gabourey Sidibe (also known as Gabby) was born on May 6th, 1983. She is a multi talented actress who rose to fame in 2009 for the role she played in the movie Precious, which is based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire. This acting debut in fact garnered Gabourey a nomination in the 2010 Academy Awards for Best Actress. Gabourey was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Harlem.
In the movie Precious Gabourey plays the central character on Claireece “Precious” Jones, an illiterate, obese, 16-year-old girl with two children (both of whom are the products of being raped by her father) trying to escape the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of her parents. The film won numerous awards, including two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award and Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Award.
In late 2009 she was nominated for a Golden Globe award in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her performance in Precious.
Coming Up From Gabourey Sidibe
Gabourey is due to appear in the movie Yelling to the Sky, a Sundance Lab project directed by Victoria Mahoney and starring Zoe Kravitz, in which she plays a bully.
In April, 2010, Gabby hosted Saturday Night Live with musical guest MGMT. She is now working on a television series for the Showtime network entitled The Big C.
