Expert Plus Size Swimwear Style Tips: Meieli Sawyer from About.com
We’re back again today to bring you even more plus size swimwear style tips from the experts! We started off this series by having Jeanne from Always For Me and Vanessa from Kiyonna share their curvy swimwear style secrets.
Today we have the immense pleasure of having About.com’s very own plus size fashion guide Meieli Sawyer share with us her swimwear style secrets. So without further ado, let’s dive into the interview…
Pasazz.net: What should a plus size woman keep in mind when choosing a swimsuit?
Meieli from About.com: I think it’s important to be true to your body type. I love bandeau bikinis, but they won’t support my bust or stay up in the surf, because I am larger up top. If you want a swimsuit that lasts, and that you feel comfortable wearing, it’s important to balance your taste with your needs. Instead of buying that bandeau, I might try a twist-front bikini top with halter straps — plus underwire.
Pasazz.net: Which, do you think, are the 3 most flattering swimsuit styles for a full figured woman?
Meieli from About.com: It really depends on your unique shape, but there are groups of swimsuit types that look better on most of us. While our smaller-framed friends might not look great in high-waisted bikini bottoms, they look smashing on many of us. Any swimsuit works when it has adjustable ruching, since we can use that to “mold” the swimsuit around our curves. Lastly, a great one-piece with boy shorts is lovely for concealing stretch marks and cellulite. You can always pop a short swimskirt on over it, too.
Pasazz.net: Which are this season’s hottest swimwear colors?
Meieli from About.com: You can’t go wrong with brights like orange and coral. Greens and blues are great choices as well, and you can also mix any of these colors with another trend of the season: prints, both floral and geometric.
Pasazz.net: Would you encourage full figured women to wear colorful swimsuits, also with prints?
Meieli from About.com: Absolutely. If you don’t want to wear a printed swimsuit, try a solid one, and then experiment with printed cover-ups and sarongs instead. If you like tankinis and bikinis, you can also trying a mismatched look, with a printed top, for example, and a solid bottom that picks up the pattern’s main color up above.
Pasazz.net: What accessories would you suggest, to complement a swimsuit, for a beach perfect outfit?
Meieli from About.com: I like functional accessories for the beach. Try a bright (waterproof) watch, a big sun hat, or a headscarf. If you don’t swim and you just want to look sexy, experiment with lightweight wooden earrings and bangles.
Pasazz.net: Which are you very favorite swimsuit styles for 2001?
Meieli from About.com: I like one-piece swimsuits with slight cutaways. You might think I’m crazy, but take a look at Monif C.’s totally hot “Monaco” swimsuit, with a little peek-a-boo right under the bust! Another style I like is the ruffled swimsuit. I like a few ruffles around the backside to make my waist look smaller, and it’s a cute way to have your swimsuit stand out. Lastly, I am always a fan of longline, retro-style swimsuits with halter necks for added support.
Pasazz.net: What advice would you give to plus size women who do not feel comfortable enough to hit this beach and poolside this summer?
Meieli from About.com: I think there are many ways to flatter your body and still spend time by the pool or at the beach. Pop on a one-piece swimsuit first, and then get a knee-length sarong that you can tie around your midsection in a way that’s most comfortable. For more upper body coverage, look for a generous, lightweight cover-up with short sleeves that can be cropped or cut to hit the waistline of your sarong. If you experiment with enough looks, you can find something that suits you. You need to be willing to try new styles, though. First go to beaches or pools where you are most comfortable. Surround yourself with other adventurous, fashionable women and body-positive people when you start experimenting with your poolside fashion, and you’ll quickly gain more confidence.
I want to thank this opportunity to thank Meieli for sharing her curvy swimwear style tips with us!

Expert Plus Size Swimwear Style Tips: Kiyonna
Hi ladies! We’re back today with more plus size swimwear style tips from the experts and this time we have the lovely Vanessa from Kiyonna share some advice. Kiyonna have this season come out with a gorgeous. retro inspired plus size swimsuit collection, so we had to see what they thought looks best on our curves on beach!
Pasazz.net: What should a curvy woman consider when she is out and about swimsuit shopping?
Vanessa from Kiyonna: She should think – “Am I containing my wobbly bits- and what part of my body do I really want to focus on flaunting while wearing a bathing suit.” For example: I’m all about the boobs- so I go for some more daring necklines because I have the cleavage for it- I have a great friend who does not, but she totally has the perfect hourglass figure and basically, a great behind so she goes for a more conservative front with great back detail (scoop back, cut outs, a great curve hugging sarong).
Pasazz.net: What do you think are the 3 most flattering swimsuit styles for a full figured woman?
Vanessa from Kiyonna: Surplice Malliot, halter-top swim dresses, retro 50’s inspired fitted suits (ruching is a plus!)
Pasazz.net: Which are this season’s hottest colors in swimwear?
Vanessa from Kiyonna: Fuchsia, burnt oranges, and the perfect teal. Black, lipstick red and navy are classic swim colors
Pasazz.net: Do you encourage full figured women to wear colorful swimsuits, with prints?
Vanessa from Kiyonna: Totally- color looks great on curves- there’s something very confidence boosting about wearing a great bright color. And prints- if done the right way are fabulous. I always stay away from the very large ones- you know it’s bad if you have a huge flower covering half your bottom or worse, one boob.
Pasazz.net: What accessories would you recommend for a beach perfect outfit?
Vanessa from Kiyonna: Depends on what color you are going with- but for a bold bright solid color I love adding gold or silver hoops and a long necklace- it just adds that final touch. Of course this is if you are the more lounge by the pool kind of girl- maybe not for the super active diver’s/surfers. Cover-ups are the best accessory too!
Pasazz.net: What swimsuit styles does Kiyonna offer in 2011?
Vanessa from Kiyonna: Very figure flattering retro inspired pieces with built in support systems. We have a more daring surplice style with curve enhancing ruching in the midsection with a slight cover-up of the upper thigh area. Also the Ava Convertible has a little more coverage up on top with so many different options- great for people with commitment issues. LOL!
Pasazz.net: What advice would you give to plus size women who do not feel comfortable enough to hit this beach and poolside this summer?
Vanessa from Kiyonna: Embrace those curves- the only thing you can wear to really make you feel comfortable anywhere is your confident smile. When you are poolside in the right suit, you feel like the best possible version of “you” and everyone will notice.
Thank you so much Vanessa for taking the time out of your surely busy schedule to share with us and all Pasazz.net readers some great curvy swimwear tips. I encourage everyone to check out Kiyonna’s swimwear collection; if you’re looking for something distinctive and that will last these are swimsuits to consider!

If you are still a jeggings virgin (that is, you still do not own a pair of jeggings, or as they are also sometimes called, denim leggings) here are 5 reasons why you should go and buy yourself a pair right away. 1. Comfort: These babies are truly comfortable! If you thought your pair of jeans was comfortable, think again. Jeggings of course are very similar to regular leggings, they are pretty much the same thing except the material, look and feel is different. So they come along with the comfort of leggings, and the stylish look of jeans. A winning [...]

Did you know that, if you’re looking for a tankini or even a skirtini, you can shop for your top and bottom sizes separately at Swimsuits For All? All lot of plus size women wear different size tops and bottoms. I myself have this ‘issue’… I am an inverted triangle body shape, so have broad shoulders which are wider than my hip area.
